Ph.D. studentship at Louisiana State University

#1 Unread post by jliang »

The Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences (DOCS) at Louisiana State University (LSU) invites applications for a graduate (MS or PhD) student to contribute to a three-year (possibly longer) project funded by the Moore Foundation beginning in the summer or fall semester of 2022. Students interested in novel methods to help monitor ocean characteristics, such as sea level, are encouraged to apply. The graduate student hired for this opportunity in LSU DOCS will perform observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) to help design the placement of instruments along a proposed 300 km sub-sea cable between Vanuatu and New Caledonia. The prospective graduate student will need to become familiar with high-performance computing (HPC), Fortran, and a post-processing language (Matlab or Python preferred), each of which can be learned while completing requirements for the LSU DOCS graduate program. Some training will be provided to run OSSEs with the Estimating the Circulation & Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) state estimation framework, which is built on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model (MITgcm). Due to the project's regional focus, students from Vanuatu, New Caledonia, or other nearby Pacific Islands are particularly encouraged to apply.

This assistantship provides students with a stipend as well as tuition and out-of-state fee waivers. Information on the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences can be found at https://www.lsu.edu/cce/academics/gradu ... /index.php

The student will work with Dr. David Trossman (https://sites.google.com/site/davidtrossman/). Please contact Dr. Trossman (dtrossman@lsu.edu) if interested.
