How to calculate the isopycnal and diapycnal flux?

#1 Unread post by yourgod_mwt_cn »

Hi folks
Do you have any idea to calculate isopycnal and diapycnal fluxes from the ROMS output? I know how to calculate the lateral and vertical flexes. But I need to decompose the fluxes to isopycnal and diapycnal.

Hi,
As for the isopycnal flux, you could divide one section into a few density classes and calculate the flux across each class. As for the diapycnal flux, there are two ways: one is through the control volume method, and the other is through -d(w's')/ds. The detailed derivations are described in Wang et al. (2017JPO) "Total Exchange Flow, Entrainment, and Diffusive Salt Flux in Estuaries".
