ROMS Blows up on after first time step

Dear ROMS users,

I'm running ROMS for a setup of the North/Western European shelf including the North Sea similar as was used in this paper (https://doi.org/10.1029/2020JC016325)

I ran this set-up successfully using glorys12v1 and ora-20c ocean reanalysis data as lateral forcing input. Now, I changed the lateral forcing input to SODA3.4.2 data and get a model blow-up.
I've tried to figure out what might cause this blow-up but haven't figured it out yet.




Therefore, my question is: does anyone have a clue what might go wrong here?






From comparing the forcing input of ORA, GLORYS and SODA (figures attached) the biggest difference I see is some strong meridional currents in the northern part of the domain as well as a weird spot of high velocities in the English Channel: might these cause the blow-up?

For the figures:


These are the annual averages of the climatology lateral forcing file. Some figures compare annual values of temperature, salinity, sea level, momentum for the different forcing files. Some other figures show the initial values for momentum for the SODA forcing file, whereafter the model blows up.

Your model is blowing up right away. I think that it is blowing up in the barotropic kernel (step2d) because I suspect that your currents are becoming very high. That may be a CFL violation due to surface forcing or, more likely, to lateral boundary conditions data. You should compare that forcing or lateral boundary conditions data with your successful application.

Yes, I compared the forcing files: those are the figures I sent before. I've now run ROMS changing the high current files, using for example a maximum of 0.4, 0.35, 0.3 or 0.1. However, I still get a blow up.

What else should I change you think?

From those plots it does appear that the English Channel is where blow-up is likely to occur, but the error flags grid point (i,j,k) = (0,0,0), not a local blow-up point.

Your initial and boundary values appear to be benign, so it is odd that the blow-up occurs on the very first step and is everywhere. I would look closely at whether the regridding of SODA has left NaN values in your initial conditions somewhere on land. You can't have that.

Since you have all these files, you could try starting with SODA boundary data but initial conditions from a different model that was stable.

I got my model running. Indeed the problem was NaN values in one of the input files.
