"Cohesive and Mixed Sediment Transport Processes in ROMS"
The Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) is an open-source regional ocean model with a large user community. The version distributed as part of the Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere–Wave–Sediment Transport Modeling System (COAWST) includes two-way coupling with the atmosphere model WRF and the wave model SWAN, and contains routines for transport of non-cohesive sediment, biogeochemical processes, seagrass growth, and wave-flow-vegetation interactions. Recently, we implemented algorithms for treating cohesive and mixed sediment. These include the following: floc dynamics (aggregation and disaggregation in the water column); changes in floc characteristics in the seabed; erosion and deposition of cohesive and mixed (combination of cohesive and non-cohesive) sediment; and biodiffusive mixing of bed sediment. Additionally, changes to the sediment bed layering scheme were made that improve the fidelity of the modeled stratigraphic record. In this webinar, we will describe and demonstrate this new functionality and provide examples of these modules implemented in idealized test cases and a realistic application.
