Postdoctoral Scholar in Regional Coupled Modeling at
Scripps Institution of Oceanography
University of California, San Diego, CA
Location: La Jolla, CA.
Deadline: Position is available immediately. Applications will be considered until positions are filled. Preference will be given to applications received by 31 March 2017
A postdoctoral scholar position is open at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) as part of a new joint initiative between SIO, MIT and the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) aiming at developing an advanced ensemble prediction system for coupled regional sub-seasonal to seasonal prediction. The project will also include aspects of data assimilation and stochastic parameterization.
The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to work closely with Drs. Bruce Cornuelle, Art Miller and Aneesh Subramanian at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The successful candidate will be expected to work on coupling a regional ocean and atmosphere model. They will join an already established multidisciplinary group at SIO working on ocean and atmospheric modeling, data assimilation and uncertainty quantification.
Qualified applicants should possess a Ph.D. in Oceanography, Meteorology, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field. Background and expertise in one or more of these following areas will be considered when selecting the candidates: regional ocean and/or atmospheric modeling, developing ocean-atmosphere coupled models, large-scale uncertainty quantification, ensemble forecasting, and high performance computing. Applicants should be able to work in a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment involving code development and large dataset analysis.
Per normal Postdoctoral appointment policies, all positions are envisioned as being initially for 1-year, with extension possible contingent upon performance and availability of funding. The University of California, San Diego is an AA/EOE. Start dates are flexible, but we are eager to hire soon.
To apply, please submit electronically as a single PDF: (1) a brief cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) and the names of three references. Applications can be sent directly to Bruce Cornuelle at bdc@ucsd.edu or to Aneesh Subramanian at acsubram@ucsd.edu.
SIO is a world-class research institute with a mission to seek, teach, and communicate scientific understanding of the oceans, atmosphere, Earth, and other planets for the benefit of society and the environment.
The University of California is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action Employer with a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
