The School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences At the Georgia Institute of Technology is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Ocean Modeling.
The Postdoctoral associate will collaborate in a multi-institution, interdisciplinary project to quantify the physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms that redistribute hydrocarbons from the benthos to the water column in the Gulf of Mexico, as contribution to the Gulf Research Initiative. The goal of the project is to investigate through numerical modeling the physical processes coupling the Gulf of Mexico circulation to CH4 distributions and concentrations. Using ROMS, the transport pathways though the water column will be simulated, implementing state-of-the-art nesting techniques to zoom on the submesoscale processes at the seep locations. The modeling effort will allow to determine the role of physical advection on the fate of methane and oil and to quantify the variability of the basin over seasonal and interannual timescales. Numerical integrations will provide a context for extending field measurements to broader spatial and temporal scales and will guide the extensive field program.
The postdoctoral associate will be able to participate, if interested, in multiple cruises to collect physical, chemical and biological data.
We are looking for candidates with experience using ROMS and with a solid background in fluid dynamics. Individuals with experience in coupled biogeochemical modeling will be given close attention. The initial appointment is for 12 months, with the possibility of 1yr renewal upon satisfactory performance. The annual salary is $46,000, negotiable and commensurate with experience.
