Netcdf 3.6.3 problem

Hi,

When I am trying to install Netcdf everything seems to go fine until I run make check and then I receive error messages. I have posted the log history from my attempt. I am using the post from Dr. MacCready's website at UW and using 3.6.3 so I can try to avoid a lot of the problems that it appears people are having with Netcdf 4.

Dear Linda--

It appears that it passes the fortran tests, and fails the C++ tests. Since you only need the fortran libraries for ROMS, it seems like you should be good to go once you install it.

Or if you're the sort of person who finds failed tests troubling, you could rebuild it without C++ support, using the --disable-cxx switch. From the INSTALL file:

     This turns off the building of the C++ API. Setting the environment
     variable CXX to null for configure will have the same effect.

Thanks for the help. I went ahead and just didn't worry about it failing the C++ tests and after I modified the make files to direct to where I installed Netcdf I executed make and all seemed to go well until the end when I received the following string

This is something else, but they look like warnings, not errors. Did it successfully create an executable?

That's not netCDF-related. The missing symbols are ROMS variables. For example to take the first two

The symbols rx0 and r0 are variables declared in module mod_scalars, in source code file mod_scalars.F.

I've never seen error messages like that. Weird. You're using Gfortran, right? What version? What OS?

A Google search on "can't find atom for N_GSYM stabs" shows up some interesting info. Possibly something about debugging symbols and specific to Macs??

I did get an oceanG file after running the make.

I am using gfortran 4.2.3 and running it on Mac OS 10.6.8. I tried running $./oceanG < ROMS/External/ocean_upwelling.in > log & and the upwelling example seemed to come together OK. So it seems like it worked but is just not allowing finding all of the variables.

I searched in google for "can't find atom for N_GSYM stabs" and it seems that there may be an error from using gfortran 4.2.3? If I were to remove 4.2.3 and move to a newer edition it seems like I may be able to solve some of the problems. If I were to update gfortran would I need to go through and redo the install on netcdf? I am very new to all of this and am teaching myself so I really appreciate the help.

You're unlucky to have run into such an obscure problem so early in your learning curve.

You probably wouldn't need to rebuild netCDF if you upgraded Gfortran, but I'm not making any guarantees. Over the life of Gfortran there have been a few changes in the format it uses for Fortran 90 module files (the ones with the .mod extension). But rebuilding netCDF doesn't take very long, so it's worth doing just in case, in my opinion.

The environment variable USE_DEBUG (which is often set in build.bash) controls whether you build with Fortran debugging flags. Turning them on is a good idea when testing new code, but slows execution down substantially.
