What is the context?
In general, xi is what we call the coordinate in the mapped rectangular domain going in the positive i direction. Likewise, eta is the coordinate going in the positive j direction. Even if your domain is rectangular and not curvilinear, it could be rotated with respect to east and north. I have a domain in which xi goes NE and eta goes NW.
