Post-Doctoral position at U. Minnesota Duluth

Hello- I have funding through the National Science Foundation for a 2.5-year postdoctoral position at the University Of Minnesota Duluth's Large Lakes Observatory. The research addresses the role of ice in interannual variability in Lake Superior (and large lakes in general). The successful applican...

Re: Possible bug regarding humidity and ice

When I read the surface heat flux fields (latent, sensible, lwrad, swrad, or shflux) from a station file, the values are all about rho*cp (~4x10^6) times smaller than would be expected. I don't have this problem with fluxes read from a history file. I'm using 3.0- this may be the problem- I haven't ...

Re: Possible bug regarding humidity and ice

Kate- Did you mean to say that you specify it in g/kg? Both bulk_flux and ice_bulk_flux assume that the humidity input is in g/kg if ICE_MODEL is defined, and both immediately divide by 1000 to get it into units of kg/kg. I have done comparisons between ROMS outputs of bulk (sensible and latent) flu...

Possible bug regarding humidity and ice

I'm working on using ROMS to look at interannual variability in Lake Superior. I'm using "realistic" meteorological forcing and am using the ice model. Humidity is very oddly treated in ROMS. As I understand, ROMS looks at the size of the number in the humidity variable and uses this to de...

Density of Freshwater- new code

Hello all- This may be of interest to anybody out there who is using ROMS to model a freshwater system (I'm using ROMS to model annual variability in Lake Superior). I had been getting somewhat unrealistic results in ROMS right around the temperature of maximum density (3.98C at p=0, and decreases b...

SeaIce issues

Hi- I'm working on using ROMS to model interannual variability in freshwater lakes that form ice seasonally, like the Great Lakes. I'm currently working on a simple 1-D test platform with seasonal shortwave forcing, and all other forcings held constant. I've noticed two very odd behaviors, and I'm n...

slight clarification

The CHIMP is meant only as a proof-of-concept of a real-time, interactive modeling tool based around a research-grade model core. We are currently looking for funds to do this "right"- it's current form is a bit rough. Still, I encourage people to download the executable and have a look. j...

CHIMP

For information about the Chesapeake Interactive Modeling Project (CHIMP) please visit: http://www.d.umn.edu/~jaustin/CHIMP.html It uses ROMS as a didactic GUI to teach the basic circulation in the Chesapeake Bay. It can used for formal education (K12, undergraduate, graduate) , informal education (...

grid access

Hi Kate-

I have a few students who might be interested in the grid access seminar. Let us know what we need to get set up at this end.

Estuary modeling Postdoc at Large Lakes Obs., UM-Duluth

UMD Large Lakes Observatory invites applications for a 1-year postdoctoral associate to start in early 2006. The successful applicant will work on an NSF-sponsored grant using numerical models to study the interaction of estuaries with wind-driven shelf circulation. Prospective applicants should hav...
